This year my family decided on a Chinese Father's Day dinner. And when we celebrate something at a Chinese restaurant we go all out; starting with lobster salad and shark fin soup. So, we visited the Grand Restaurant located at the top of the New World Mall in Flushing, Queens.
As some of you may know shark fin will be banned in New York starting July 1, 2014, so we were worried that the Grand Restaurant would be one of the few restaurants in New York that has already stopped serving it. Luckily, it was not. However, when the waiter placed the serving bowl onto the table my mother and I looked at each other in dismay. The servings were noticeably smaller. Normally, in every restaurant we've ordered shark fin soup in, there would be enough for two rounds of full helpings, and enough left to fill each of our bowls at least half way. Tonight, we were missing a whole round.
But, there were pleasantries that came with the soup as well! Instead of crab in the soup, there were generous helpings of lobster! Lovely large chunks swam in each of our bowls along with the generous helpings of shark fin! What a wonderful mistake! They did not skimp on what they gave us, that's for sure. It was delicious and filling. The lobster was a little dry, but we just got lobster that we weren't supposed to get, so who the hell is complaining?
The meal finished off with the usual orange wedges and honeydew slices. They also included a sweet red bean tapioca dessert soup Delicious
My mom says that dim sum is also quite lovely here, so I will be venturing back to try that soon.
I highly recommend visiting Grand Restaurant. If you don't think you will be hitting $50 on your bill for free parking, the garage also honors two hours of free parking if you spend $30 in the supermarket in the same mall.
Let me know what you think!
